Is a husky the right dog for you?

I have just read a great article in Veterinary Times by Joel Dudley about the increase in popularity of Siberian Huskies.

Professionals involved in animal care and animal charities have noticed a sharp increase in the popularity of huskies and, perhaps inevitably, the increase in the number being signed over to charities.

Huskies are without doubt a very striking breed; beautiful markings and a keen intelligent aspect make them superficially very appealing. However, even the most experienced dog owner will struggle with a husky if they do not research this breed in depth. Our advice when thinking about buying any breed is STOP, LOOK, LISTEN and this is especially important with a breed such as the husky.

STOP and think. Huskies were originally bred to pull sleds in freezing conditions over long distances and therefore have an enormous amount of energy and stamina – do you? Because you will need it. A quick spin round the local park is totally inadequate for this breed and behavioural issues will arise if they are under stimulated and their exercise requirements are not met. Really consider how much time is needed for exercising this breed. Are you out at work? What other commitments do you have? If you enjoy running, cycling and/or long country walks this could be the breed for you as your husky will happily run and run alongside you! Beware of hot weather though – huskies have thick coats designed for the Siberian cold and will suffer in the heat. In warm weather, a husky will need to be walked either early in the morning or later in the evening once the sun has gone down – does your lifestyle allow for this? Conversely, they will not care when the weather is wet or freezing, so consider whether or not you are prepared to exercise this dog every single day – come rain or shine!

LOOK at all aspects of your life – can your home accommodate a big, boisterous dog? Do you have a tall, strong fence? Huskies can jump surprising heights – even a 6ft fence cannot contain a determined husky. Do you have plenty of time to devote to training your husky as they need their minds as well as their bodies to be exercised. Do you have cats or other small pets? Huskies might not be trustworthy round small pets as they consider them prey so a husky should be avoided if you do have small pets.

LISTEN to your veterinary surgeon and/or Practice Nurse. Our vets and nurses are always delighted when people take time to consider carefully their choice of dog. They will happily talk to you about which breeds are most suited to your lifestyle, as the consequences can be so devastating if you get it wrong.

The final word goes to Julie Bedford, The Blue Cross’ Head of Animal Behaviour, who commented in the article about huskies: “People are getting specialist breeds, like the Ferrari of the dog world, and expecting a learner driver to be able to take it out.”
