Baby Pigeons by Laura Nutley, Veterinary Nurse

These two baby pigeons were brought to us here at Grove Lodge at the beginning of May. They had fallen out of the nest and a Grove Lodge client brought them in for us to check over.
At this time of year we are inundated with baby wildlife and do our best to hand rear as many as we can. With the two baby pigeons this involved ‘crop-feeding’ an egg and seed mixture every few hours and keeping them warm until they were fit enough to be rehabilitated with WADARS and subsequently released. This is an incredibly rewarding – but time consuming! – part of our job, which is enjoyed by the nursing staff. However, if possible it is always advisable for members of the public to avoid moving baby birds, as the parents are often watching and will continue to feed them.
If there is an immediate risk to the bird’s safety, for example cats nearby, then pick up the bird, punch some air holes in a sturdy cardboard box, pop the bird in to the box and bring it along to Grove Lodge as soon as possible. Alternatively, please contact WADARS on 01903 217788. Please remember that it is not appropriate for members of the public to try to hand rear baby birds as they need specialist food and care.

I rescued a pidgeon last night who was unable to fly and just sat at the side of the road. I picked it up and left it in the front garden over night. it survived but is still unable to fly. A friend who keeps budgies said its a baby (although it looks big to me) said I shoud keep it safe. I have put it in a dog carrier in the back garden and given it some water and trill and also some bread. It seems ok but not eating. Not sure what to do. Dont want it to die, trying to help it. what should I do. did I do the right thing….. Please email with your number so I can phone for some advice. I have called everyone i can find on the web site but no-one in my area. Cheadle Hulme, Stockport, Northwest.
