Wildlife - keep it wild!

Posted by Abigail on 17/06/08, filed under Wildlife |

You might remember we posted a piece recently about avoiding moving baby birds away from their nests and parents. Unfortunately, we have since had a sad situation where a member of the public brought in a whole nest of baby birds from a tree, believing they were not being fed by their parents. Despite our best efforts and careful hand feeding, all except one of these babies died.

Our advice and that of the RSPCA is to leave wildlife where it is. Unless the animal or bird has an obvious injury, or is in immediate danger, it is ALWAYS best to leave it in situ. Wild birds and animals suffer extreme stress when handled and therefore moving them must only ever be a last resort.

You may have heard on Radio Five Live yesterday that the RSPCA are playing CDs of birdsong to baby birds who are being hand reared in captivity. This is to try to alleviate the problem that birds who are not raised in the wild do not learn to sing properly – take a look at the article and video on the BBC website for more: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/7455648.stm.

There’s also further info on this story on the home page of the RSPCA website, www.rspca.co.uk and further advice on what to do with wildlife.

  1. Yes, I have heard of people doing this and I agree totally that it is bad and does a lot more harm than good. I guess lots of people generally don’t know enough about these things.
