The Staffie dreams are made of!

Buster and his toys!Buster, a beautiful 7 year old male Staffordshire Bull Terrier, came to us at North Barn Kennels in February this year. His owner signed him over to Worthing and District Animal Rescue Service (WADARS) as a change in work circumstances meant Buster was being left alone for long periods of time. Buster settled in to the kennels very well, but when people came looking for their new companion, Buster was always overlooked. This was very sad as Buster had a sweet, kind and gentle nature but was not being considered for rehoming due to his breed.

Then on the first Sunday in May, when Buster came out for his morning play it was obvious he was unwell. He was hunched up, showing that he was uncomfortable in his tummy and had watery diarrhoea with blood in it. He was extremely quiet and miserable.

We phoned Grove Lodge Vets and were given an appointment for that morning. Buster was subsequently admitted to the Hospital for intravenous fluids as he had started to dehydrate due to the diarrhoea. He also had antibiotics and plenty of tender, loving care! Next day, as he was nearly back to normal, he came back to the kennels. Even though his illness had been quite short, he had lost a lot of weight and everyone was determined to find this lovely dog the great new home he so deserved.

With care and a good diet (of 5 meals a day!), Buster regained the weight he had lost, but still no one was interested in this happy little chap. He was shiny and beautiful and now at a perfect weight, but he still didn’t catch anyone’s attention.

However, one evening my nephew, who helps at the kennels, mentioned that a friend of his would like to buy a Staffie pup. I suggested that as there are so many lovely rescue dogs needing homes, how about meeting Buster to see if they were right for each other?

Well, the rest is history. Chris and Jo came to visit Buster and it was love at first sight! His wonderful nature and charming personality won them over and he is now very happy and settled in his new home – as you can see from the picture!

Don’t judge a book by its cover. All dogs are individuals and must be treated as such, regardless of any bad press surrounding their breed. It is very important to remember that inappropriate owners cause the majority of dogs’ issues and with correct and kind training, any dog can be a wonderful part of your family.
