juno-mawgan-porthYou may have seen this upsetting item on the BBC News today. Tragedy struck on Tuesday when two German Shepherd police dogs were left in a parked car, while the temperatures outside the car soared to more than 28 degrees. The RSPCA were called and the two dogs were found dead inside.

This is a timely reminder that it takes only minutes for a dog to die in a hot car.

We have discussed this issue before on the blog but the message is always the same – NEVER leave your dog in a car during warm weather even if only for a few minutes.

Leaving windows open does not help. Leaving the sunroof open does not help. The temperature inside a car can rise enormously in just a few minutes. This is a horrible way for any dog to lose their life and can easily be avoided if people are vigilant and plan ahead. The RSPCA sum it up well:  “Don’t take your dog along for the ride”.

Take a look at this story from BBC News Scotland for more information, further highlighting the dangers of leaving dogs in hot cars.

UPDATE: Check out the BBC website for more information regarding the police dog handler.
