Choosing the best breed for you

Posted by Abigail on 06/02/09, filed under News | Leave a comment

One of the most important decisions you need to consider before you get a puppy is which breed will be most suitable for your family and lifestyle.

Hopefully, everyone would realise that to have a highly intelligent breed, for example a German Shepherd or Border Collie, when you are out at work all day or your time is limited, is completely unsuitable and will lead to serious behavioural problems in the future.

People often fall in love with the puppy when it is tiny and cute and do not consider how big it will grow and how much mental and physical stimulation it will need to keep it balanced, happy and healthy. Sadly, they often only realise their mistake too late when the dog is under stimulated and needing remedial training, or sometimes more drastic measures.

With a little thought and advice from the right sources, issues can be avoided. Take a look at this piece on the Puppy School website. This will help guide you in the right direction and ensure you have a compatible canine companion for life.

If you find you are having problems with your puppy or dog, it is essential you consult only a qualified behaviourist for help. Check out the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors website for members.  Here at Grove Lodge, our fully qualified behaviourist, Jo Raine will be more than happy to help. Call her direct on 01903 223137.

Whilst browsing the RSPCA website, I came across this petition – organised by Thorpe House School in Norwich – as part of a school animal action club they have set up called Speak Out for Animals. They are campaigning for microchipping of dogs to become law – what wonderful children!

Show your support for them and their great campaign by adding your signature to their petition.

Don’t forget, for just £16.50 Grove Lodge will microchip your pet in an ordinary appointment. This is a one off charge and gives you peace of mind for life.

RSPCA prosecute cruel owner

Posted by Abigail on 26/01/09, filed under News, Pet Care Advice | Leave a comment

Just a few pounds on a flea treatment would have prevented a little dog called Scally from suffering enormous discomfort and her owner from a large fine and community service. Scally had flea allergic dermatitis which went untreated as her owner would not pay vet’s bills. Luckily, this cruelty did not go unnoticed and following a successful prosecution by the RSPCA, Scally now has a loving new home. Check out the full story on the BBC website.

Remember, you have a duty of care to ensure your pet is fit and healthy – flea and worm treatment are fundamental regular healthcare and you must budget for these when you take on an animal.

Take a look at the RSPCA website for details of what your new puppy or kitten needs.
