Have you ever considered fostering?

As an animal lover, I cannot imagine not having pets and, working here, it is tempting to take home every animal who comes through the door! However, with the rising cost of living it is important to be sensible and stick to the number of pets you can afford and 2 cats is my financial limit.

If you are keen to have a pet, but really do not have the resources to support one, have you ever considered fostering? Cats Protection have a scheme for cats who need to live in a home until they are able to be rehomed, possibly because they need to recuperate after injury or because they have been traumatised in some way.

All the while you are fostering, you will not be responsible for the cost of any veterinary treatment or food.

The rewards are enormous. You will give a cat the chance at a better life, restore their trust in people and ensure that they have a settled and happy future with their new family.

Take a look at the Cats Protection website for more information or contact Rod Austin at the Worthing branch of Cats Protection on 01903 765580.

Here comes summer!

Having just spent my lunch hour sitting in the sun, resulting in a neat red line on my arm and rosy cheeks, I thought it was time to remind everyone that cars get extremely hot on sunny days, even if the temperature seems fairly mild outside the car.

Check out previous posts about this subject – leaving the window open does not help. Leaving the sun roof open does not help. A bowl of water in the car does not help. Your dog will become extremely distressed and dehydrated within a matter of minutes if left in a car on a day like today even if you do all of the above. The RSPCA website states that if the temperature outside the car is 22˚C/72˚F, the temperature increases to 47˚C/117˚F in just an hour.

So, while you are enjoying the first proper sunshine of the year this weekend, remember: DOGS DIE IN HOT CARS. Leave them at home or take them with you. There are lots of lovely pubs and cafes in the area with plenty of tables outside for dog lovers. Your dog will love being included in your day out and it’s a great way to get chatting to people!

Dozens of Dogs Walked for WADARS!

The sun shone on Highdown Hill on Sunday 18 April 2010 as approximately 100 people and their canine companions took part in the 3rd Walk for WADARS.

We couldn’t have asked for better weather for people and dogs alike – beautiful sun and a light breeze to keep furry friends cool – perfect!

The walk was also a great opportunity for the WADARS dogs to have a day out. Several of the dogs needing new homes joined in and thoroughly enjoyed playing with the other dogs and getting lots of cuddles.

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who took part and made this event so enjoyable and successful. Once all the sponsor money is received, we hope to improve on last year’s fantastic total! I’ll keep you all posted.

A big thanks also to The Spotted Cow Pub in Angmering who made us all so welcome and ensured there was a constant supply of fresh water for all the dogs.

Date for your diaries: the next Walk for WADARS will probably be held on Sunday 19 September 2010, but keep checking here or the WADARS website for more details nearer the time!
